Studio and Gallery, Kilkenny, Ireland
2021
A new multi-level studio with wall space for a large collection of contemporary paintings on land sweeping down to the River Nore in Co. Kilkenny. Taking inspiration from the form and appearance of industrial buildings built along the river in the 19C, the new building is tall with minimal window openings. Arranged as four blocks around a central void, the building is entered on the top floor via a bridge from the road. The galleries and studios spiral down from the entry level to the field below. On the ground floor a kitchen, dining area and living area open onto the land. The arrangement maximises the available wall space for artwork and allows natural light from above, controlled by triangular canvas sails, to permeate the internal spaces. Sliding glass panels and frameless glass strips between the blocks frame views over and along of the river valley. The arrangement of the building on a split level allows the gallery and studio spaces to both interconnect and be separated from one another. The project received planning consent in 2021, it remains unbuilt.
