5e Arrondissement, Paris
1994
Approached by a long walk over the roofscape, this former one-room caretaker’s apartment sits on top of an eight-storey 1930s apartment building in Paris’ Fifth Arrondissement. Within the 34 square-metre footprint, the space was reconfigured to create a separate bedroom with a number of different internal arrangements, achieved by sliding or swinging various internal floor-to-ceiling doors. The apartment can be opened up to maintain the full visual dimensions of the space or closed down as required. Three boxes contain the components of the kitchen, bathroom and storage space. The bathroom washbasin forms part of the kitchen worktop, separated by electronic glass that provides privacy when needed. A portal frame and glass canopy frame extraordinary views of the Paris skyline.
